REAL LIFE EXAMPLE

Mr Y plays fairly regularly at Interpoker on $1/$2 no limit, or pot limit, tables. He also plays the odd tournament. In a month he will play around 4000 raked hands, generating something like $1500 in total rake. He is on a 30% rakeback deal and this nets him nearly $500 in rakeback each month.

THE RAKE IN A NUTSHELL

Rake is the amount of money that the poker room takes from the pot every time a hand is played. This, along with tournament fees, is how they make their money. It is not dependant on who wins or loses - every pot contributes to the house rake.

So how is rake actually calculated?

Most poker rooms will usually take between 0 and 5% of each pot and around 5% of tournament buy-ins. This is then attributed accordingly to each player in line with his or her activity. Exact percentages and amounts can usually be found on the operators website.

Pokerplex employs the following rules which are set by the Cryptologic network :-

“The house rake is calculated based on 5% of the pot to a maximum of 3 Dollars/Pounds/Euros rounded down to the nearest 25 units. We take no rake at all if the hand ends before the "flop" (no flop - no drop).”

Pokerplex uses the dealt contribution method to work out each player’s contribution to the pot, and therefore how much rake each individual has generated. This mounts up over the course of a month and enables the poker room to determine whether players have qualified for bonuses and promotions. This monthly rake total is commonly known as MGR (Monthly Gross Rake). The other contribution method employed by the poker rooms is Contributed.

Ok, so what exactly are dealt and contributed methods?

These are the two methods by which a player’s portion of rake is calculated. The dealt method takes the total rake for the pot, which is then divided by the number of players dealt into the hand. For example if the pot rake is $1.00 and 10 players are dealt in, each player will earn $0.10 for the hand.

The contributed method divides it by those players that contributed to the pot. For example, if the pot rake is $5.00, 10 players are dealt in and 5 players contribute, each contributing player will earn $1.00 for the hand.

There is a further contributed method, called Weighted Contributed, where the MGR that you earn is dependent on how much you contribute to the pot.
